5 Amazing Things To Do In Toulouse

Toulouse is the fourth largest city in France and is located in the south of the country. It is the capital of the Occitanie region and a very important city for European aerospace. There is the location of the headquarter of Airbus, SPOT satellite system, and many other companies. However, the city is not just important because of the aerospace companies, but because it has a long history of being an economical and cultural center (since the 5th century). There you can find one of the oldest universities in Europe which was built in 1229 and nowadays is the fourth largest in France. Toulouse is also well-known in France as the “Pink city” due to the pinkish-terracotta bricks in which the city is built. There are lots of things to do around the city but if you are short on time I made a list for you of 5 amazing things to do in Toulouse.

Table Of Contents (5 Amazing Things To Do In Toulouse):

Basilique Saint-Sernin de Toulouse

Basilique Saint-Sernin de Toulouse

Basilique Saint-Sernin de Toulouse is a medieval basilica that contains the relics of 128 saints. The church is built in Romanesque style sometime between 1080 and 1120. The basilica has been a part of the UNESCO World Heritage list since 1998.

The church was once a part of an abbey but unfortunately the buildings around the church didn’t survive. Now days you can just wander into the basilica and admire the architecture, organs, and numerous arks that lead to the center of the basilica.

I put Basilique Saint-Sernin de Toulouse as number one because it is a highlight of the city and even if you are staying in Toulouse for a few hours you need to see this amazing basilica.

Capitole de Toulouse and Place du Capitole

Capitole de Toulouse is a neoclassical building that was built between 1725 and 1760. The palace is located in the center of the old city and is the heart of the municipal administration of Toulouse. Capitole de Toulouse is as stunning inside as it is outside. There are lots of beautiful ceremonial rooms full of frescoes. The Hall of Illustrious has the most amazing fresco and is open to the public.

5 Amazing Things To Do In Toulouse: Capitole de Toulouse and Place du Capitole

Place du Capitole is located right in front of the Capitole de Toulouse. It is a spacious square with lots of restaurants and cafes facing the Capitole. There you can relax and get a great dinner with drinks or an ice cream during the hot day and enjoy a view of square and beautiful architecture.

Capitole de Toulouse and Place du Capitole

Cody and I liked this square very much and decided to get dinner right outside the square at Restaurant Le May, which ended up being delicious and a great value.

Pont Saint Pierre

5 Amazing Things To Do In Toulouse: Pont Saint Pierre

Pont Saint Pierre has become one of my favourite places in Toulouse. The place is just charming. The bridge is full of lights and in the dark, a great spot for a walk. There are walking paths on the both banks of the river Garonne and it is the best place to meet your friends or simply to have a beer.

Pont Saint Pierre

Pont Saint Pierre can be a bit crowded, especially on the weekends, but I would say it gives the place some charm. Local students just relaxing by the river with picknics and drinks gives you a feeling that you are back in university and having a good time with your friends.

Jardin Pierre Goudouli

Jardin Pierre Goudouli is a small park in the old city of Toulouse. The park is a charming spots to take a rest from the busy city and relax by the beautiful fountain.

Although there can be a crowd during the weekends, Cody and I still managed to find an empty bench by the fountain to enjoy our ice cream.

Jardin Pierre Goudouli is especially wonderful on a hot day, when you can just cool down in the shade of the trees and feel the water on your face from the fountain.

Farmer’s Market

The Farmer’s market is located behind the subway station “Capitole” in a tiny square. Cody and I found this market accidentally. As always you find the best spots in a new city when you allow yourself to get lost.

Farmer’s Market

The market was wonderful, full of the tasty cheeses, salamis, sausages, wines, fruits, and vegetables from the farms around the city. We spent quite some time getting all that delicious French cheese that we have never tried (Cody is a huge fan of cheeses…an all food).

Most of our evenings in France weren’t spent in restaurants, they were spent in parks enjoying recently purchased cheese, meat, and wine. That, to me, is one of the best ways to experience France.
